It is with great sadness that I am writing to tell you about the passing of our oldest member and dear friend, Margaret d’Entremont. She died at home early Monday morning September 6, 2015 due to a fall. She was born in 1927 and was about to turn 89 years old.
Margaret and many of her family have been a member of Sunrise Yoga studio for many years. She started coming to yoga class at Sunrise Yoga because her son, Hugh, brought all of his family at one time or another to class.
In recent years she had two operations, one for a twisted bowel and the other for a broken hip. She recovered from both of these events quickly and returned to her yoga practice. Her doctors were surprised with how quickly she recovered from both of these operations. She credited her quick recovery to her yoga and active life style.
Following her hip operation she came into the yoga studio with a walker to resume her yoga practice. A short time later she left the walker behind and came in with a cane only.
Margaret was a good friend of mine. Her ready smile, positive attitude and determination to get on with life made our brief visits something I looked forward to each week following her Saturday morning class.
She will be greatly missed by me and the many others that had a chance to met her at the studio.
Obituary
It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Margaret. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Florence and Hugh Gillis.
Mom grew up in Whitney Pier, Sydney and was a proud Cape Bretoner. She graduated from Holy Angeis High and then attended Normal College in Truro.
Her first teaching job took her to Sheet Harbour, where she met our father, Marcel. Their relationship was an example for us all. With support and encouragement form our father, Mom returned to St. Mary’s University to complete her BA, all while raising a family and teaching full-time.
Mom and Dad spent most of their lives together in Dartmouth. Mom loved her family, her church, her many friends and teaching. She taught at Mary Lawson Elementary for over 20 years.
She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul and St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Churches. She was a long standing member of the CWL, the church choir, a Eucharistic minister and lector. She enjoyed playing bridge with her ladies’ bridge group for many years. She cherished time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her loving and open spirit brought joy to everyone. She will be dearly missed.
Margaret is survived by her daughters: Anne, Denise (Larry) Carmichael; sons, Hugh (Patrica), and Paul; grandchildren Nicolas (Gwyneth), Sarah (Richard), Nathan, Ben, Justin, and Alexi; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Isabelle, and Charles. She is also survived by her sisters, Patrica MacRae and Dorothy “Kit” (Gene) Vollick, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Marcel.
Margaret – Marg, Mom. Grandma, Great-Gran, loved us all deeply and unconditionally. she approached life with a spirit of joy and curiosity. Following the death of Marcel in 2004, that was tempered by a deep sorrow. Margaret and Marcel grew together as life partners in their marriage and she felt his loss deeply. Yet she still found great delight in her family, her many friends, traveling and her church activities. Mom never stopped learning or teaching.
Shortly before her 80th birthday, Mom began practicing yoga where again she found new friends
We will forever cherish her.
Karma Class
Sunrise Yoga studio celebrated the life of Margaret d’Entremont on Sunday September 20 from 3 – 5 pm with a combination karma class and pot luck.
There were two yoga classes:
- A kripalu yoga class which is the kind of yoga that she preferred.
- An Ashtanga yoga class.
Following the yoga classes we shared our memories of Margaret while sharing a light pot luck meal.
We had about 20 family and friends of Margaret attend the Karma class. We raised $270 for the Chalice fund.
