Last Wednesday 12 May 2009 was our 415th wedding anniversary! Everyone always looks at us very funny when ever we say that. Actually it is our 415th monthly anniversary.
We started “celebrating” our monthly anniversay several years ago. One of us would happen to remember that it was the 12th of the month and would rush to wish the other “Happy Anniversary”. There were never any gifts, dinners or any other celebration. We were just celebrating the fact that we remebered we were married on the 12th and we are still together. The challenge and the fun was to see who could be the first to remember and surprise the other with the best wishes.
There was one 11th of the month that we went to bed shortly before midnight. I happened to remember that tomorrow was the 12th on the way to bed, so I lay quietly in bed waiting for the new day to come when suddenly Shirley popped up to look at the clock to check the time as well. We both had a laugh and wished each other Happy Anniversary and off to sleep we went. That month it was a tie.
There have been times that we have both completely forgotten and remembered days later, at which point we would have a belated celebration.
Other times we have forgotten and discovered afterward that we had had a special event on that day anyway even though we had forgotten about the anniversary.
We do not mark the event on our calendar, we do not create electronic reminders, we rely on our memory to remind us. Sometimes we forget, but most times we remember. The fun is in seeing who can remember first.
The point of this story is to remind you to not rely on your memory but to write the events on your calendar, in your PDA, in your phone, or on the palm of your hand. Whatever it is that you do to make sure that you remember an important event.
